2024 Scholarship Awards
Reverend Wyatt T. Walker Social Change Award
Reverend Wyatt T. Walker was a servant leader, civil rights activist, theologian, and a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., Rho Iota Lambda Chapter. He served as the president of the Petersburg branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, state director of the Congress of Racial Equality, and helped found the Southern Chrisitan Leadership Conference. This award will be given to an outstanding student pursuing a career in public service, the nonprofit sector, or social justice oriented work.
Willie Miles S.T.E.M Award
Willie Miles, Jr. was a Black physicist, civil engineer, beloved math tutor, and a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., Rho Iota Lambda Chapter. During his career, he developed infrastructure to support nuclear systems and designed, planned, and implemented infrastructure solutions for the Virginia state government. This award will be given to an outstanding student of color* pursuing a career in science, technology, engineering, or mathematics.
Charles Henry Chapman Students of Color in Education Award
Charles Henry Chapman was a founder of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. After completing his education, Chapman entered higher education and eventually became Professor of Agriculture at what is now Florida A&M University. This scholarship will be given to an outstanding student of color* pursuing a career in education.
NATHANIEL ALLISON MURRAY TECHNICAL, VOCATIONAL, AND COMMUNITY COLLEGE AWARD
Nathaniel Allison Murray was a founder of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. After completing graduate school, Murray returned to his home in Washington, D.C. There he spent most of his career teaching at Armstrong Vocational High School-- founded in 1899 as one of two segregated manual training schools for African-American youth. This award will be given to an outstanding student planning to pursue technical or vocational training or attend a community college.
The Sphinx Award
Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. develops leaders, promotes brotherhood and academic excellence, while providing service and advocacy for our communities. This award will be given to a current undergraduate member or the dependent of an active and financial member who has exemplified exceptional leadership abilities, academic excellence, and a demonstrated track record of community service. (Please provide Alpha ID#.)
The President and Chairman’s Scholastic Achievement Award
Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated develops leaders, promotes brotherhood and academic excellence, while providing service and advocacy for our communities. This award will be given to an outstanding student who has exemplified exceptional leadership abilities, academic excellence, and a demonstrated track record of community service.
*We utilize the phrase student of color to refer to students who may identify as Black, African-American, Asian, South Asian, Middle Eastern, Pacific Islander, Latinx, Chicanx, Native American, or multiracial.

Dear Scholarship Applicant,
Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., Rho Iota Lambda Chapter and The 423 Fund are excited to provide one-time scholarships in the amount of $1,500 for up to six eligible students in their noble pursuit of higher education. Scholarship funds will be awarded upon evidence of matriculation in an accredited technical, vocational, two-year, or four-year institution and will be paid directly to the institution’s bursar office or the department that manages financial accounts.
Below, you will find information regarding the criteria and eligibility, submission requirements, and deadlines for our 2024 scholarships.
Criteria & Eligibility
Applicants must be a graduating high school senior from Chesterfield County Public Schools in the year of the award, with the exception of undergraduate applicants of The Sphinx Award;
Applicants must meet all of the criteria for the award in which they are applying;
Applicant must possess at least a 2.5 grade point average;
Applicants must demonstrate community involvement, academic excellence, and plan to attend a technical, vocational, two-year, or four-year institution; and
Applicants may not be related or a dependent of any board member or staff of the 423 Fund.
Application Submission Requirements
Application packets must include the following in order to be considered:
Completed and typed application;
Two (2) letters of recommendations from a teacher, administrator, counselor, or an individuals with significant knowledge of applicant’s experience and involvement;
A resume outlining employment, extra curricular activities, honors, awards, and/or community service;
An official and recent transcript with your cumulative grade point average. Transcripts can be unsealed and uploaded with your application; and
A personal essay of no more than 500 words and 12 font in Times New Roman font. Please ensure your essay contains no grammatical errors.
Application Deadline
The deadline for scholarship applications is April 1, 2024 by 11:59 PM, no exceptions. Applicants will be notified by May 5, 2024. Incomplete or late applications will not be considered.
